A recent report from researchers at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China discusses the antitumor effects of aloperine (ALO), a quinolizidine-type alkaloid found in a Chinese herb. The study found that ALO inhibits the proliferation and migration of non-small cell lung cancer cells and prevents tumor growth. It does this by inhibiting the fusion of autophagosomes with lysosomes, leading to the accumulation of sequestosome-1 (SQSTM1) and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which induces tumor cell apoptosis. ALO was also found to interact with VPS4A, a protein involved in autophagy, and enhance the efficacy of an anti-PD-L1/TGF-beta bispecific antibody in inhibiting tumor growth.
