Abstrakt: This paper provides a broad overview and demonstrates a control algorithm enabling the next generation of train driving. It is capable of providing a train handling solution for train and track specific in-train force limits utilising different driving strategies such as Minimum Time Train Control or Energy Efficient Train Control. Three different case studies are presented using real world track plans and range from a reference train similar to train consists in operation today through to 5.5 km and 10 km freight trains and a 124000 t, 15.5 km unit train. The results show that through driver advice it may be possible for human driveable trains to reach lengths of up to 5km, however, beyond this is the domain of computer controlled asynchronous train handling.
