In order to successfully deliver a project of the magnitude of Inland Rail, unique challenges such as the vast project area and significant material quantities which will challenge the capacity of the current supply chain need to be addressed. A range of culvert options were considered for implementation across Inland Rail, including innovative coated corrugated metal pipes, prefabricated arch culverts, concrete pipe as well as three and four sided box culverts. Key influences in determining the most appropriate culvert solution included: - the ability to fabricate, transport and store the culverts; - the availability to procure the large quantity of required culvert units; - technical viability including mitigating impacts to adjacent land and achieving design life; and - constructability including management of black soil areas and availability of materials, in particular cast in situ concrete from local batch plants. Implementing a combination of three-sided Reinforced Concrete Box Culverts (RCBC), Reinforced Concrete Pipes (RCP), coated Corrugated Metal Pipe (CMP), and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes is warranted for Inland Rail to achieve its delivery schedule outcomes which rely on timely procurement of drainage solutions.
