A study conducted at Goethe-University Frankfurt in Germany investigated the prevalence and characteristics of rare hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes in a European cohort. The study found that rare HCV genotypes were uncommon among European HCV-infected patients. However, in patients who had failed direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment, rare subtypes of HCV genotype 3 and genotype 4 were more prevalent. The study also identified specific resistance-associated substitutions in these rare genotypes. The limited availability of pangenotypic DAA regimens for first-line therapy and targeted regimens for retreatment could potentially delay the elimination of HCV. [Extracted from the article] |
