According to a preprint abstract, recent research suggests that morality is comprised of multiple domain-specific psychological mechanisms that address the problems of cooperation in human social life. These mechanisms give rise to seven types of morality: Family, Group, Reciprocity, Heroism, Deference, Fairness, and Property Rights. However, it is unclear how genes and environments influence these morals. A study using a large twin sample found that moral values are influenced by multiple heritable mechanisms, and models with fewer than the predicted seven factors did not fit well. The study also found a need for a domain-general mechanism, although it showed non-significant heritability and may reflect response bias. The study acknowledges its limitations and suggests further research on the nature, structure, and content of morality. [Extracted from the article] |
