Abstrakt: A recent study conducted by researchers at the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital focused on the distribution and bioclimatic niche modeling of melanistic Vipera aspis, also known as the asp viper, in Italy. The study aimed to investigate the evolutionary role of melanism in reptiles and its impact on various biological aspects. The researchers found that the distribution of melanistic phenotypes in asp vipers in Italy is influenced by mean annual temperature and elevation. Additionally, the study highlighted distinctions in bioclimatic niches among the three subspecies of asp vipers in Italy. Further research is needed to explore the potential influence of latitude and elevation on these patterns. [Extracted from the article]
