Abstrakt: Strabag, in partnership with Arup, is designing and constructing for Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario, the Advance Tunnel for the Scarborough Subway Extension (ATSSE) in Toronto, Canada. The 7.8 km long extension of the existing Line 2 consists of a large 10.7 m internal diameter single bore tunnel housing twin subway tracks. The single bore tunnel solution represents a significant departure from the traditional arrangement of twin tunnels for subways in North America. Additionally, segmental lining for transit tunnels in Toronto have traditionally used steel wire reinforcement; however, there are many benefits associated with the alternative steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC). ATSSE represents the first-time SFRC is used to solely reinforce a transit tunnel of this size in Eastern Canada. This paper discusses the challenges with design and acceptance of SFRC segments including TBM ram loads, radial joint performance, and the ring's response during fire events. The state-of-the-art numerical models employed are presented. The advance procurement approach for TBM and PCTL's procurement to accelerate the project schedule is also presented.
