Abstrakt: Inserts may be used in hoppers to achieve the desired flow pattern. They are often used in the form of a retrofittable device to correct an undesirable flow pattern that is giving rise to either flow blockages or dynamic wall loads of large magnitude in silo walls. Understanding how the gate loads are affected by inserts is an important aspect of slide gate design, which is not covered by Australia standard AS3774 or Eurocode EN 1991-4. This study aims to investigate gate loads under the influence of hopper insert(s) using Discrete Element Method (DEM) Modelling. The DEM results indicate that the gate loads are reduced with the usage of insert(s) near the outlet. DEM simulations are also used to explore the effects of quantity, dimension, shapes and positions of hopper inserts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
