This article discusses a study on estimating the population size of Eastern Caribbean sperm whales for conservation purposes. The researchers conducted surveys in the Lesser Antilles region and used photo identification and acoustic data to estimate the population size. They found that the population is structured at a small spatial scale and that previous data from Dominica is biased and does not represent the entire population. The study provides more accurate population estimates for sperm whales in the region and emphasizes the need to consider different vocal clans separately in conservation efforts.
