This article, published in Marine Mammal Science, describes a rare observation of potential altruistic behavior by a male northern elephant seal. Altruism, the act of assisting another in need, is commonly seen in social birds and mammals, but male altruism is rarely observed in marine mammals. The researchers document an incident where an adult male elephant seal responded to a distressed pup and helped it return to shore, despite the potential cost to his own survival and reproduction. The authors speculate that kin selection and the low harem density at the colony may have contributed to this behavior. Further research is needed to understand the development of altruistic traits in marine mammals. [Extracted from the article] |
