This article introduces a special issue of the journal Lambda Nordica, which focuses on rethinking sexuality in Nordic and Post-Soviet contexts. It discusses a symposium held at Södertörn University in 2022, where scholars from various countries and disciplines came together to explore transnational perspectives on sexuality. The special issue aims to contribute to the field of transnational histories of sexuality by examining movements and relations within and between Estonia, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. The articles in the issue cover topics such as transnational lesbian networks, the construction of homosexuality in Finland and Sweden, and the transnational traffic in pornography in a specific Swedish town. The article also explores forgotten local histories related to sexuality and the boundaries between tradition and modernity, rural and urban spaces, and different social and economic systems. It discusses the case of Raimo Jääskeläinen, Finland's first openly gay male celebrity, and how his public image created tensions within the gay community. The article also examines the porous boundaries of gay and male pornography in a context where magazines aimed to reach diverse audiences. Overall, the article highlights the complex and interconnected nature of sexuality and its impact on national and transnational contexts. [Extracted from the article] |
