A research study conducted at San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton, California, aimed to quantify the workload experienced by surgeons performing primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA and TKA). The study used the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA TLX) survey to measure the workload and compared it to the reimbursement provided by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The findings revealed that revision THA and TKA placed a significant mental and physical burden on surgeons, which was not adequately compensated by CMS. The study suggests that additional compensation should be provided to surgeons performing revision arthroplasty procedures. [Extracted from the article] |
