Abstrakt: A recent study conducted by researchers at Radboud University Medical Center explored the care needs of chronically ill patients with intellectual disabilities (ID) in Dutch general practice. The study found that patients with ID have unique care needs due to their limitations in adaptive behavior and intellectual functioning. These patients may struggle with recognizing and reacting to disease symptoms, proactively seeking health information, and managing their diseases independently. The research identified six key care needs for suitable chronic disease management: a trusting relationship between patients and healthcare providers, clear expectations about the care process, support in disease management, directive decision-making, support in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and accessible medical information. However, the study also revealed that organizational factors and a lack of training or experience with patients with ID hinder healthcare providers' ability to fully meet these needs. The researchers suggest that providing easy-language information on chronic diseases and communication guidelines could help healthcare providers better support patients with ID in managing their diseases.
