Researchers from Tongji University School of Medicine in Shanghai, China have developed a novel diagnostic criterion for assessing histological healing in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). The criterion, called the inflammatory cell enumeration index (ICEI), is based on the proportions of certain immune cells in the colonic lamina propria. The ICEI was found to be effective in predicting histological healing and identifying patients at risk of relapse. This research provides a simplified approach to monitoring histological healing and predicting the prognosis of UC. The study was published in the Chinese Medical Journal.
