Abstrakt: A new study conducted by researchers from Universitas Brawijaya in Malang, Indonesia, has investigated the pathomechanism of placental Plasmodium vivax infection in relation to low birth weight (LBW). The study collected blood samples and placental tissues from mothers who delivered babies with LBW and found significant differences in angiogenic factors between infected and non-infected cases. The researchers concluded that Plasmodium vivax sequestration may promote LBW through alterations and imbalances in angiogenic factors led by HIF-1a. This study provides new insights into the understanding of malaria in pregnancy and its implications for fetal growth. [Extracted from the article]
