A study conducted by the Maimonides Institute for Biomedical Research of Cordoba (IMIBIC) in Spain explored the effects of whey protein-based oral nutritional support on patients with solid tumors undergoing systemic treatment. The study found that patients who underwent surgery for their primary tumor and received combination treatment experienced a significant reduction in circulating cytokine levels. However, after three months of nutritional support with whey protein-based oral supplements, there were no significant changes in cytokine levels. The researchers also noted that baseline levels of MCP-1, a specific cytokine, were significantly associated with mortality in these patients. Further evaluation of MCP-1's role as an independent factor for mortality is recommended. [Extracted from the article] |
