Abstrakt: A recent study conducted by researchers in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology II has provided new insights into the effects of melatonin therapy on insulin sensitivity in human adipose tissue (AT). The study found that melatonin, when administered at a pharmacological dose, decreased insulin sensitivity in AT during the evening. This finding may help explain previous studies that have shown a decrease in glucose tolerance after oral melatonin administration in the evening or when eating late. The research utilized abdominal AT biopsies from participants with severe obesity and employed western blot analysis and RNAseq analyses to assess insulin signaling and metabolic pathways.
