A new study conducted by researchers at the National Institute of Health has examined the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) in Peru from 2022 to 2023. The study focused on the sequencing and characterization of 13 H5N1 genomes collected from wild birds, poultry, and wild mammals in Peru. The research found that the Chilean and Peruvian samples clustered together, indicating a common ancestor. The study emphasizes the importance of genomic surveillance in understanding the evolution of avian influenza and the need to address the challenges posed by climate change.
