Astronomers using the Gemini North telescope have discovered a pair of merging quasars, the first ever found during the period of the Universe's history known as Cosmic Dawn. The quasars were seen only 900 million years after the Big Bang, making them the most distant pair of merging quasars ever found. This discovery provides valuable insight into the formation of supermassive black holes and the evolution of quasar host galaxies during the Epoch of Reionization. The researchers used spectroscopy to confirm the nature of the quasar pair and estimate their mass. This finding opens up new possibilities for studying the early Universe and its cosmic structures.
