In 2020, the late-medieval Spornburg Castle in Helfenberg near Dresden was inventoried for the first time. It consisted of a main castle built of stone, comprising a ward and a lower ward. In front of the latter was a complex system of ramparts and moats. Documentary sources and pottery finds from the castle, which was first mentioned in 1349/1350, indicate that the castle was mainly in use in the 14th and 15th centuries, before it was abandoned in favour of a newly constructed manor house, probably in the early 16th century [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
