Abstrakt: English nowadays can no longer be related solely to Standard English and an Anglo-centred standpoint, but it needs to be understood from a wider perspective, one that takes into account World Englishes varieties and its use as a lingua franca (ELF). Indeed, English has developed into one of the most widespread means of communication in contexts where speakers do not always share the same linguistic and cultural background and need to coconstruct mutual understanding. In order for students to effectively and appropriately use English in today globalised world, they need to be prepared to a wide range of English practices and to be able to interact in diverse and complex communicative contexts. The development of students' ELF communicative skills entails the need to adopt and devise materials that provide a more complex conceptualisation of English, including how communication strategies represent important resources to reach mutual understanding in ELF intercultural communication. Adopting an ELF-aware pedagogical perspective, this paper aims at presenting and discussing some guidelines that could help teachers develop their own ELF-aware materials, especially focusing on the use of communication strategies and meaning negotiation.
