This article discusses a medical mission in Gambo, Ethiopia, where five patients were diagnosed with pellagra, a condition caused by niacin deficiency. All of the patients shared a common dietary profile, primarily consuming maize with minimal or no meat products. The article highlights the association between maize consumption and pellagra, particularly in populations heavily reliant on maize as their main source of calories. The shift towards maize consumption in Ethiopia, coupled with poverty and limited protein intake, may be contributing to the increased incidence of pellagra. The article suggests the need for health campaigns and measures to address this condition effectively. [Extracted from the article] |
