This article examines the use of lime as a building material in the reconstruction of heritage sites in Bhaktapur, Nepal, after the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake. Lime has gained popularity as an alternative to mud-based mortars. The paper explores the historical use of lime and argues that its classification as a "traditional" material is a constructed tradition. The article also discusses the historical use of mud in Newar architecture and the introduction of lime during the Rana regime. It examines the shift towards modern materials like cement and steel after the 1934 Nepal-Bihar Earthquake and the post-earthquake recovery and conservation efforts in Bhaktapur. The text highlights the complexities of tradition and modernity in the reconstruction process. [Extracted from the article] |
