In the article "Cold War liberals in the dock" by Samuel Moyn, the author examines the failures of modern liberals to fulfill liberalism's potential for emancipation and progress. Moyn criticizes noted liberal intellectuals for making excuses for the persistence and deepening of inequities in liberal democratic society. He argues that these intellectuals have replaced true liberal aims with false substitutes, such as human rights and the fear of external enemies. Moyn puts seven mid-twentieth century Western intellectuals on trial for their restrictive and negative forms of liberalism. While Moyn's critique is valid, it is important to consider the need for both human rights and standing up to the hard right in a progressive liberalism. [Extracted from the article] |
