A study of Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older undergoing non-cardiac surgeries has found that frailty is a significant predictor of postoperative outcomes, regardless of the type of surgery performed. Frail patients had higher mortality rates, increased readmission rates, and substantial home time loss compared to their robust counterparts. The study challenges conventional views on surgical risk in older, frail patients, emphasizing the importance of considering frailty in preoperative assessments.
