This study was run to investigate the effect on the physical properties of chitosan by swelling the chitosan with water (1:4) prior to the radiation. Chitosan samples were exposed to 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 kGy with a dose rate of 3,5 kGy/h at a Gamma-cell Irradiator, Pasar Jumat, Lebak Bulus. The characterizations of irradiated chitosan were conducted in this study. The average molecular weight (MW) was determined by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) while the solubility of chitosan in acetic acid was determined by the viscometry method and the color changes were assessed using Chromameter. The results showed that irradiation changed the physical properties such as MW, viscosity, and color of the chitosan samples. At the highest irradiation dose applied (50 kGy), the MW value decreased by 79.24%. This study revealed that the percentage reductase of molecular weight is directly proportional to the viscosity of chitosan in acetic acid. However, our findings indicate that the presence of a small amount of water at 50 kGy showed a similar percentage of molecular weight reduction compared to the chitosan irradiated in solid-state.
