A recent study conducted in Europe has found that pugs have a genetic risk variant for necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME), a potentially fatal disease. The study aimed to determine the allele frequency of this risk variant in the European pug population and investigate its association with the clinical phenotype. The results showed that the risk variant was present in 25.7% of European pugs, with 7.4% being homozygous for the variant. Dogs with the NME phenotype were significantly more likely to be homozygous for the risk variant. This research highlights the clinical relevance of the genetic risk variant in pugs.
