A recent study conducted by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) in Manaus, Brazil, has identified the first case of Oropouche fever in the border region of Colombia. The study analyzed 175 samples from individuals with symptoms similar to dengue during a 2019 epidemic, using genetic sequencing and clinical characteristics. The Oropouche virus isolate from Leticia, Colombia, was found to belong to lineage 2 and shares a common ancestor with samples from Ecuador and Colombia. The researchers suggest that cross-border surveillance can help identify the circulation of arboviruses in the region, which are often underreported in public health surveillance systems.
