A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Wyoming explores the role of Schwann cells (SCs) in brain metastasis. While SCs are known for their involvement in myelination and nerve repair in the peripheral nervous system, their function in facilitating the transport and activation of neoplastic cells in the brain is less understood. The study highlights how SCs interact with various cancers, such as lung, breast, melanoma, colon, kidney, and pancreatic cancers, to accelerate cancer spread and modulate immune responses. The research provides insights into SCs' involvement in perineural invasion and modification of the blood-brain barrier, shedding light on their role in brain metastasis.
