This article discusses the use of an embedded critical ethnography experience to help neurosurgery residents understand locally relevant social determinants of health (SDOH). The authors describe a focused critical ethnography exercise that was incorporated into a yearly travel experience through the state of West Virginia. The exercise involved a driving route that exposed residents to varying levels of rurality and underserved locations, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the catchment area and its population. The authors found that this learning experience was well-received by residents and improved their understanding of the impact of SDOH in the rural underserved state. [Extracted from the article] |
