Prunus was a unique ornamental collections in Cibodas Botanic Gardens. Pollination is an essential factor in sexual fertilization and occurs when pollen grains are transferred to the stigma. This study aimed to determine the mechanisms of pollination and pollen viability of Prunus sp. in Cibodas Botanic Gardens. One species of Prunus was tested for self and cross pollination. The pollen viability test was observed by in vitro germination and staining method. The results showed that artificial pollination which is geitonogamy (53.43%) and cross-pollination (66.33%) gave higher percentage of pollination compared to open pollination (44.17%) and self pollination (35.00%). Moreover, the viability of pollen grains of Prunus sp. was observed by the in vitro germination and staining method. The result showed that the viability of pollen grains of prunus was between 74.55-91.51%. Otherwise, the pollen germination between 7 to 24 hours was ranged from 0% to 11.53%. On the other hand, stigma receptivity was studied by a hydrogen peroxide test under a microscope and was found to be receptive started five days before anthesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
