A recent study conducted at the University of Delaware explored the relationship between cholesterol levels, resting brain blood flow, and cognition in middle-aged adults. The study found that LDL cholesterol, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, was negatively correlated with resting cerebral and hippocampal blood flow. However, HDL cholesterol, which is considered potentially cardioprotective, did not show any significant associations with resting brain blood flow. Interestingly, HDL cholesterol was positively associated with memory-related outcomes. These findings suggest that cholesterol may impact brain health and should be considered a target for preventing age-related memory loss. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms. [Extracted from the article] |
