A scoping review conducted by the National Trauma Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia, aimed to explore and categorize the published definitions of major hemorrhage (MH) in adults following injury. The review found that there is no consistent definition of MH, with definitions falling into six distinct categories. The most common definition of MH was the receipt of blood products, followed by composite definitions and definitions involving physiological parameters. The absence of a standardized definition for MH poses a significant challenge to both injury research and clinical practice, and addressing this gap is crucial for improving trauma care and outcomes for critically bleeding patients.
