A recent study conducted at Rigshospitalet University Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark, has explored the feasibility of using a label-free surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) assay for therapeutic drug monitoring of methotrexate (MTX). The researchers found that the SERS assay, when combined with appropriate sample preparation and multivariate data analysis, showed a good correlation with a reference chromatographic method. However, the SERS-based approach underestimated MTX concentration by 10%. Despite this, the study provides strong evidence that SERS can be used for therapeutic drug monitoring of MTX, bringing us closer to implementing a SERS-based assay in clinics.
