Abstrakt: Building on historical texts, concepts of ethnography and surrealism, and citing examples from the Spanish film-maker Luis Buñuel from the 1940s and early 1950s, this paper demonstrates how the Icelandic/Canadian film-maker Guy Maddin turns a critical eye on western Icelandic iconography by reworking historical film styles and the Icelandic mythos in his first feature film Tales from the Gimli Hospital. The film is not primarily an aesthetic effort; rather, it takes a critical stance towards culture and tradition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
