Abstrakt: Over the past three decades, international Spenserians have accepted William S. Tay's argument in The Spenser Encyclopedia that Spenser has never been popular with the Chinese and has gone unnoticed despite the upsurge of literary translation in the Chinese mainland since 1979. Motivated by the publication of the first complete Chinese translation of The Faerie Queene and in response to Tay's argument, this essay reconsiders the reception of Spenser by presenting a chronological overview of The Faerie Queene in the Chinese mainland from the 1840s to 2021. It shows that Spenser reception in the Chinese mainland began in the mid-nineteenth century and has gone through four major periods. The reception of Spenser and The Faerie Queene in the Chinese mainland has been shaped by characteristics of the text itself, political and cultural contexts of China's different historical periods, Chinese critics' interests, and influences from the international community of Spenser studies.
