Solar Desalination is a method which utilises the solar energy from the sun to remove salt from the water by making use of specially designed stills. This paper focuses on the manufacturing of a low cost single basin solar still and testing various parameters for checking the quality of the water output. The basin area of the solar still is 0.5625 m2. The experiments were carried out for various water inputs ranging from 3 litres to 9 litres and values for Total Dissolved Solids, pH and Electrical Conductivity tested. The efficiency of the solar still was found to be 20.7% which has been improved with the installation of solar reflectors made from household Aluminum foils. It was found out that as the basin water depth increases the efficiency of the still decreases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
