This article examines the divisions between the Scottish and Irish clergy in the Western District of Scotland in the mid-nineteenth century. It focuses on the appointment of an Irishman, James Lynch, as Coadjutor Vicar Apostolic and his controversial actions, including his reluctance to sign a receipt for a significant bequest to the Catholic Church in Scotland. The article also discusses concerns about the mismanagement of trust funds by the bishops and the legal case brought by a priest, John Carmont, regarding the Mitchell Trust. The disputes between the Scottish and Irish clergy overshadowed the importance of properly managing trust funds. [Extracted from the article] |
