Abstrakt: A recent report from Amsterdam University Medical Center discusses the findings of a study on bacterial vaginosis (BV) and its association with recurrent spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) in pregnant women. The study involved a cohort of high-risk women with previous sPTB and examined the vaginal microbiota using 16S rDNA sequencing. The researchers found that the composition of the vaginal microbiota was not associated with sPTB, but observed an increase in Lactobacillus iners-dominated microbiota and a decrease in diverse microbiota mid-gestation, likely due to BV treatment. The study suggests that the microbe-related etiologic contribution to recurrent sPTB may be limited in cases where preventive therapies have been implemented. [Extracted from the article]
