Abstrakt: A recent study conducted at the Parkview Mirro Center for Research and Innovation in Fort Wayne, Indiana, explored the use of electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) in cancer care. The study found that high levels of symptoms and distress in cancer patients can have negative impacts on treatment adherence, healthcare utilization, quality of life, and survival. The researchers implemented an ePRO workflow in which patients completed validated tools via the electronic health record (EHR) patient portal before each visit. The study found that providers viewed the ePRO workflow positively, citing advantages such as improved visit preparation, flow, and efficiency. However, challenges with uptake, utilization, and patient misinterpretation were identified, and potential solutions were suggested. Overall, the study highlights the importance of identifying and treating symptoms and distress in palliative oncology care and the potential benefits of using EHRs and ePROs in this context.
