A recent study conducted at University Hospital Pisa in Italy examined the impact of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) on the outcomes of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in elderly patients with late-onset bipolar disorder (BD). The study included 54 elderly patients without dementia with late-onset BD who underwent ECT, with 19 of them diagnosed with CSVD. The researchers found that the presence of CSVD did not significantly affect the outcomes of ECT, and both groups of patients showed substantial improvements in symptom severity following the treatment. Therefore, the study suggests that ECT should be considered for elderly patients with late-onset BD, regardless of the presence of CSVD. [Extracted from the article] |
