Abstrakt: A study conducted by Saarland University examined the causes of persistent digestive disorders, such as abdominal pain and diarrhea, in low-resource settings. The researchers used multiplex real-time PCR to test stool samples from symptomatic patients and asymptomatic controls in Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, and Nepal. The study found that the prevalence of pathogens varied between the three countries, with the highest prevalence observed in Mali. The most common pathogens detected were EAEC, Campylobacter spp., Giardia intestinalis, and adenovirus 40/41. The study concluded that while multiplex PCR allowed for comparison between countries, it had low discriminatory accuracy in distinguishing between symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals.
