Abstrakt: A study conducted at N.G. Chernyshevsky Saratov State University in Saratov, Russia, has provided new insights into the role of singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radical in the photobleaching of meso-substituted cationic pyridyl porphyrins in the presence of folic acid. Photodynamic therapy, which uses a photosensitizer, light, and oxygen, creates cytotoxic reactive oxygen species that can kill cancer cells. Folic acid is often used to improve the selectivity of photosensitizers, but photobleaching poses a disadvantage. The study found that L-histidine and D-mannitol can reduce photobleaching by quenching singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals. The research concluded that certain important features of the photobleaching process were revealed. [Extracted from the article]
