A recent report from the IMDEA Materials Institute in Madrid, Spain discusses research on improving the osseointegration process of medical metals, specifically titanium, through the use of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). The study proposes a combination of molecules, including the antibiotic Gentamicin, adhesion peptides, and the bone growth factor BMP-4, to prevent microbial colonization and promote bone cell integration. The research successfully observed an antibacterial effect against certain strains and observed osteoblast growth and mineralization. The study concludes by proposing the immobilization of these molecules on the surface of implants for orthopedic and dental applications. [Extracted from the article] |
