A recent study conducted by researchers at Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute has found that while bariatric surgery is associated with a higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the weeks following the surgery, the long-term risk of VTE is significantly lower. The study included over 30,000 bariatric surgery patients and over 200,000 controls, and identified 4,068 VTE events. At 30 days post-surgery, bariatric surgery was associated with a fivefold greater VTE risk, but at 1 year and 5 years post-surgery, the risk was significantly lower. This research provides valuable insights into the long-term effects of bariatric surgery on VTE risk. [Extracted from the article] |
