This article discusses the necessity of routine monitoring of gastric residual volume (GRV) in patients receiving enteral nutrition in the intensive care unit (ICU). The authors reference several studies that have examined the effects of GRV monitoring on nutritional intolerance, mortality rates, and the frequency of ventilator-associated pneumonia. The studies found that not monitoring GRV decreased feeding intolerance and did not increase mortality rates or the risk of pneumonia. However, GRV monitoring was associated with a reduced incidence of vomiting and a higher percentage of patients achieving their calorie target. The authors suggest that more research is needed to further understand the importance of GRV monitoring in critically ill patients. [Extracted from the article] |
