Bill Janss, a skilled skier and son of the founder of the Janss Corporation, became the second owner of Sun Valley Resort in 1964. The Janss group found the resort in disarray and convinced Union Pacific Railroad to sell it to them for $3 million. Janss focused on expanding and improving the mountain and making the resort more accessible for middle-class ski enthusiasts. He also played a role in obtaining planning and zoning regulations that protected the hillsides and limited development. Janss's ownership of Sun Valley brought about positive changes and a broader customer base for the resort. He sold the resort in 1977 but continued to live in Sun Valley until his death in 1996.
