For young people with mild intellectual disabilities and complex problems, it is difficult during and after a stay in residential treatment to stand their ground in a complex world. It is therefore important to know what coping strategies these young people tend to adopt, and to what extent these are related to their mental well-being. This study investigated whether their coping strategies are related to psychosocial problems and whether they employ more inadequate coping strategies than typically developing peers. The results showed that in this group of 65 participants with a mean age of 16 years (range 10 – 24 years), coping strategies as measured with the Utrechtse Copinglijst, are related to specific psychosocial problems, measured with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Furthermore, these adolescents used fewer problem-solving coping strategies than typically developing adolescents. The importance of stimulating adequate coping strategies and creating an environment that promotes problemsolving coping by youth are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
