The article explores the concept of "root shock" as described by Mindy Thompson Fullilove in her book "Root Shock: How Tearing Up City Neighborhoods Hurts America and What We Can Do About It." It discusses the traumatic stress experienced by communities forcibly displaced by urban renewal projects, leading to physical and mental health risks, financial struggles, and political marginalization. The article highlights the long-term effects of root shock, such as poverty, limited access to education and healthcare, and a lack of political power. It also examines the experiences of various communities affected by displacement, including Black women in healing and restoring communities, the impact of mass incarceration on majority Black neighborhoods, and the effects of root shock in Ireland. The article concludes by discussing the research method of Situation Analysis and the global issue of displacement caused by conflict, climate change, and persecution. [Extracted from the article] |
