Virtual emergency departments (EDs) are emerging as a new way to access emergency medical care in Australia. These virtual EDs allow individuals to access the expertise of a hospital ED through their phone, computer, or tablet. They are best suited for conditions that require immediate attention but are not life-threatening, such as wounds, sprains, respiratory illnesses, and minor burns. Preliminary data suggests that virtual EDs can effectively manage a significant portion of cases, reducing congestion in physical EDs.
